Packaging is one of the worst things for the world in terms of waste. Much of it is one time use, and a lot of it is styrofoam and plastic. I believe that getting rid of packaging (or at least minimizing it) will create a big impact on the amount of waste that goes to landfills, litters our streets, and pollutes our oceans. Holstee recently had a blog post about a zero-packaging grocery store in Austin, which leads me to believe that the world is moving in the right direction. Below is a picture of me at Berkeley Bowl using the pumps there to get some Dr. Bronner's Soap. At Berkeley Bowl, and at the Berkeley Student Food Collective, they sell some of their items in bulk, for which customers can bring their own containers. Maybe some big supermarkets will start selling their items in bulk as well?
