New Blog Post: Great Power Race!!!

As many of you know, UC Berkeley has joined the Great Power Race, run by 350.org, which is

"A clean energy competition between students in China, India and the United States. This spring we're seeing which country can sign up the most teams to take part in the official competition starting this September, whencampuses will win points for achieving climate solutions. The race to a clean energy future is the greatest challenge of our time and young people are ready to lead the way. Together, we'll make our campuses models of sustainability and spur our nations to create whole new industries."

In order to get points, we have to complete, or document events on a pre-made list, or submit ideas for approval. So, our job is to find and document any and all sustainability-related events happening on campus. We have held a meeting with all of the sustainability groups on campus and figured out what kinds of events or initiatives they have started, and are actively looking for other things happening on campus. We are also looking for people to work on events on the list that people have not started yet. All-in-all, I expect this to be a great journey, and with the resources available at  Berkeley, I believe we will be and hope to be successful!

As they say... Onwards and Upwards!

INBOX ZERO!!!!

Screen_shot_2010-09-25_at_4

Finally acquired inbox zero for the first time in over 3 years, with over 40 in the inbox less than 12 hours ago. I feel like I do keep on top of my semi-crazy ~30-e-mail a-day load pretty well (2 new ones just came in as I am writing this), but there always seems to be some of them that I either don't have the time to address, or just don't feel like addressing. Although many of them did take a lot of time (reading forwarded articles, movies, etc). I found that the way to do this is to just file things away into their respective places (ie invitations go into iCal, etc). Now I feel like I will be motivated to keep it this way!

FEELS SOO GOOD!!!!

New Blog Post: Table Drumming? via @niamhhughes

Phew, it has been a busy week...

In a recent post, Niamh Hughes shared a hand dancing performance by Irish dancers Suzanne Cleary and Peter Harding to the music of “We no speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool and producer DCUP:

As a 'percussionist' I was curious as to if there are other videos like this. After a search for:

"Table Drumming"

And

"Finger Drumming"

I was reminded of a video I saw last year of a fellow Golden Bear "Finger Tutting":

Then, I searched for "finger dancing" and saw this impressive clip

However, my search was in vain. I did not find a clip that was equal to Cleary and Harding's in both auditory and optical appeal. Their clip also stood out in respect to their editing, and costume/staging.

New Blog Post: A wise man once told me:

"All you need to be successful in life is communication and respect"
- Number One (father of the brothers Holstee)

Throughout this semester and a month at UC Berkeley, I have found that this quote is very true. Although, in order to survive in the mass of literally hundreds (1151 to be exact) clubs at this huge school, one needs other skills and values; I have still found that people who have these qualities are the ones who go far. The ones with bad communication lose respect, and the ones with little respect for each other don't get communicated to. It's a vicious cycle.
