What secret catch is lurking in your tin of tuna?! Via @niamhhughes

Tinned tuna's secret catch from Greenpeace UK on Vimeo.

Top tips I've learned:

- Bluefin, Bigeye, Yellowfin and Albacore Tuna are all overfished due to industrial tuna fishing. Skipjack Tuna is now the only healthy tuna species left. Also look for South Pacific Albacore tuna. All other Albacore stocks are overfished.

- Tuna caught by FADs and purse seine nets can trap and kill unwanted animals like juvenile tuna, turtles and sharks aka bycatch. To avoid bycatch, look for "Pole and Line caught" labelling on the tin.

- For residents of the UK & Ireland, here's a good brand guide to buying tuna. Learn more here and sign the John West petition here

- For USA residents. Sign this petition to encourage Walmart and SuperValu to make moves towards implementing responsible seafood policies. Only Trader Joes and Costco have recently stepped up to improving their seafood policies i.e. Costco announced the elimination of 12 red list species including:

- Atlantic cod
- Atlantic halibut
- Chilean sea bass
- Greenland halibut
- Grouper
- Monkfish
- Orange roughy
- Redfish
- Shark
- Skates and rays
- Swordfish
- Bluefin tuna

This is something i've been meaning to research for a while and now feel I have a better understanding of what I should/should not buy. Please help educate others and spread the word!

Thanks for the info Niamh!
